As a frequent visitor to Las Vegas people always want to know about Comps and how they work.
First let me explain what a "Comp" is, It is short for compensation, and the term "Comp" has been around as long as Las Vegas Casinos has been trying to get people in the desert to gamble at their establishments. Quite simply it is an incentive for people who are loyal customers to the casinos, and Comps can include free meals, free rooms, free stuff, or discounts on all of the above.
I always thought Comps where just for high rollers, you know the guys who play hundreds or even thousands of dollars per bet. This just is not the case, my friend and I where playing Craps at a five-dollar minimum table and where being fairly successful, when a pit boss walked over to my buddy and gave him two free buffet tickets. I was surprised and asked how he accomplished this amazing task. His answer was really quite simple he said, "I asked." This is one thing I can not stress as being very important, always ask the worst thing that can happen is that they say no.
No matter if you play slot machines or table games, if you plan on playing at a casino for any length of time, get a players reward card for that casino. Sure it might take a few minutes but it will be well worth it. At some casinos you can show your drivers license at the table games and they will put you in their system and get you a players card. So anytime I sit down at a table I always give them my players card, and if I play more than an hour, or two, ask the pit boss for a meal ticket, if they will not give you one simply ask what kind of play, and time merits one, usually they will be totally honest and let you know exactly what you will need to do. At any table game it is always good to play above the minimum level whatever that may be, especially if the pit boss is at your table or watching.
When playing slot machines or video poker always use your players card, usually most casino will give you points for every play, and the time you are on a slot machine. Many times they will also let you know how many points you need to get free or discounted items. This system is a lot different than the table games where the pit bosses are the keepers of the comps, and lets you know exactly where you stand.
Finally remember comps are not free, they are based on your play in the casinos, and are designed to keep you loyal to a particular casino. So if you do not gamble you will not be rewarded. Also remember that downtown Las Vegas, and the off-strip properties are far more generous with their comps to the average gambler that most of the strip properties. On the strip you might need to play twenty-five dollars or more per hand to even think about a free meal, but downtown twenty-five dollars a hand can get you a free room, and meals.
